1956 Canadian Open trophy on eBay
William Lombardy (1937-2017) is perhaps the great "what if" of US chess:
- tied for 1st (with Larry Evans) at the 1956 Canadian Open
- won the 1957 World Junior Championship with the still-unequalled score of 11-0 in Toronto,
- led the US to the 1960 World Student Team Championship in Leningrad, including a 29 move win as Black over Spassky!
- finished 2nd (behind Fischer) at the 1960-61 US Championship to qualify for the Interzonal, but...
- ... virtually quit chess to become a Catholic priest in 1967
- functioned as a sort-of second for Fischer during the 1972 World Championship match
- played board 5 on the US Olympiad team that won the gold at the (partially boycottted) 1976 Haifa Olympiad.
Lombardy died in near-penury in 2017 after losing an expensive eviction battle.
Many of Lombardy's chess effects are available on eBay, including a sale ending June 4, 2019 which includes five trophies and mementos, including the John G. Prentice trophy he won for finishing =1st-2nd with Larry Evans at the 1956 Canadian Open in Montreal.
