Quebec Chess Challenge (April 28)

The Quebec Chess Challenge is an annual tournament of high prestige organized by the Chess’n Math Association. This year it was held on April 28th at the Rizz banquet hall, 6630 Jarry East in Montreal. The tournament was open to children from Kindergarten to Cegep 1. During the Quebec Chess Challenge, children are matched by grade and the winner in each category becomes the Quebec champion for his/her academic level. The champion for each grade level, from 1st grade to Cegep 1, will represent Québec at the National on May 19th in Ottawa. Here are some pictures, taken by FIDE master Lefong Hua, the official trainer of the Quebec team.

Le Défi échiquéen du Québec est un tournoi annuel de haut prestige organisé par l’Association Échecs et Maths. Cette année, le tournoi à eu lieu le 28 avril au Rizz, 6630 Jarry Est à Montréal. Ce tournoi s’adresse aux enfants de la Maternelle à Cegep 1. Lors du Défi Échiquéen du Québec, les enfants sont appariés par niveau scolaire et le gagnant dans chaque catégorie est sacré champion du Québec pour son niveau académique. Un champion pour chaque niveau scolaire, de 1ère année à Cegep 1, représentera sa province lors du National le 19 mai prochain à Ottawa. Maïli-Jade Ouellet, is without any doubt one of the most promising young players in Quebec and another member of Team-Quebec. She recently won the New York State Scholastic Championship, ahead of many of the best young players (boys and girls!) from that state. She will represent Quebec at the National in Ottawa.

Elle a récemment remportée le Championnat scolaire de l’État de New York, devant plusieurs des meilleurs joueurs de cet état (garçons et filles!). Elle représentera le Québec au National à Ottawa.

In the end, we should not forget to thank FM Lefong Hua for his implication. He gives private lessons to Ananda Saha and Prince Éric Jr Guipi Bopala, both winners of this year Quebec Chess Challenge. He also gives lessons to Ananda, Prince and Maïli-Jade during Team-Quebec meetings and to Zi Yu Guan during his Sunday group lessons.
Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux (2nd place, 3rd grade), who didn’t manage to win, even though he is the highest rated player in Canada for his age, also attends group lessons (both during Team-Quebec and the Sunday lessons) from Lefong. Finally, Christine Gao (3rd place, 7th grade) also attends his Sunday lessons.

Il serait bon de remercier MF Lefong Hua pour son implication, puisqu’il donne des cours privés à Ananda Saha et Prince Éric Jr Guipi Bopala. Ananda, Maïli et Prince sont dans son groupe d’Équipe Québec. Zi Yu Guan (4e année) fait partie de son Cours Élite du Dimanche.
Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux (2e place, 3e année) fait partie de Équipe Québec ainsi que de son Cours Élite du Dimanche. Christine Gao (3e place, secondaire 1) fait partie de son Cours Élite du Dimanche. Il lui donne occasionnellement des cours privés.
