12 students from McGill, forming three teams, participated in the 2014 CUCC. Here are some impressions from the tournament. Full results should be online soon.
The 2014 Canadian University Chess Championship was held at Carleton University on January 11-12. There were two sections (Championship and U1800) and about 20 teams. The organizers did a wonderful job and even provided free pizza, coffee and donuts.
The team with the highest average rating average was from the University of Ottawa, with Mihnea Voloaca (2359 CFC) and Lloyd Mai (2326 CFC) on the first two boards, since their last two boards were unrated and thus not considered for the average.
The championship section was won by McGill University for the second year in a row (the first team to win consecutive championships since the Queen’s cup began). They beat the University of Ottawa by 3.5/4 (draw between Louie and Mihnea) and tied against Waterloo (with Louie and Raven winning, Michael and Keith losing).
FM Louie Jiang (2326 FIDE) 2415 CFC
FM Michael Kleinman (2269 FIDE) 2365 CFC
NM Raven Sturt (2281 FIDE) 2331 CFC
NM Keith MacKinnon (2172 FIDE) 2300 CFC
Average : 2262 FIDE, 2353 CFC
Raven Sturt won the prize for the best result (5/5), a DGT clock. The team also received a $100 prize.
Also at 4.5/5 was Waterloo, which tied their match with McGill A and beat McGill B in the last round. Led by Kevin Chung on the first board, they unfortunately didn’t have as many individual wins as McGill A and finished second after tie-breaks.
The U1800 section was won by newcomer Ryerson University, with McGill C tying for 2nd place (other results not yet published).
