Près de 40 joueurs se sont inscrits lors de la semaine précédant le tournoi, nous propulsant à un total de 108 joueurs. Ce succès inespéré n’est cependant probablement pas le fruit du hasard. Marguerite Yang, chargée des commanditaires, a encore cette année fait des miracles et obtenu plusieurs commandites que nous avons pu annoncer avant le tournoi :

Starbucks a décidé, cette année encore, de commanditer l’évènement en fournissant du café gratuit pour les joueurs pour toute la fin de semaine. Il va s’en dire que cette attention était énormément appréciée des joueurs.
De son côté, Sacwich (un restaurant près de l’Université) a offert 25% de rabais aux participants et plusieurs semblent en avoir profité.

Cependant, la nouveauté cette année était la commandite de la chocolaterie Jeff de Bruges.  Ils ont généreusement fourni 100 boîtes de chocolats, qui ont été distribuées aux participants. De plus, ils nous ont permis d’offrir un prix pour le meilleur cadet dans la section B (300 grammes de chocolat fins). Nul besoin de dire que les chocolats ont disparu très rapidement!

Comme il fallait s’y attendre, malheureusement, des ennuis guettaient les organisateurs. Des problèmes d’imprimante ont retardé la première ronde, et la participation poussait à la limite l’utilisation des salles. À notre grande surprise, les responsables nous ont assigné une nouvelle salle le lendemain matin… Heureusement, cette salle étant plus spacieuse, nous avons pu mieux accueillir les participants. Était-ce la fin de nos problèmes? Malheureusement non.  En plein milieu de la journée, un vandale a rappelé à un joueur que laisser des objets de valeur dans une automobile n’est jamais une bonne idée…

Toutefois, l’arrivée des vingt-deux pizzas extra-larges entre les rondes du samedi a permis de garder les joueurs bien rassasiés.

 Tout s’est ensuite bien déroulé le dimanche. Raven Sturt, troisième échiquier de l’équipe de McGill, a causé la surprise en battant GM Sambuev en ronde 4. Il a cependant perdu face à Nikita Kraiouchkine en dernière ronde. Nikita a ainsi remporté le tournoi avec un résultat impressionnant de 5/5.

Nearly 40 players registered the week before the tournament, propelling us to a total of 108 players. This unexpected success was probably not an accident. Marguerite Yang was in charge of sponsors and did miracles again this year by obtaining multiple sponsorships :

Starbucks decided, this year again, to sponsor the event by giving free coffee for all players for the weekend. No need to say this was extremely popular among players.

Sacwich, a nearby restaurant, offered a 25% discount to participants and many seem to have taken advantage of it.

However, the novelty this year was the sponsorship from Jeff de Bruges. They graciously gave us 100 chocolate boxes, which were distributed to participants. Even more, they allowed us to give a prize for the best cadet of section B (300 grams of fine chocolates). No need to say that these chocolates disappeared very quickly!

Unfortunately, as always, trouble was to be expected. Issues with our printer slightly delayed the first round, and there wasn’t much space with the unexpected turnout.  To our great surprise, we were assigned a new room the day after. Fortunately, this room being bigger, we were actually able to better accommodate the participants. Was it the end of our problems? Unfortunately not. In the middle of the day, a vandal reminded a player why leaving valuables in a car is never a good idea…

However, the arrival of twenty-two extra large pizzas allowed us to keep all players well satiated.

Everything went smoothly on Sunday. Raven Sturt, third board of McGill’s team, caused a surprise by defeating GM Sambuev in round 4. He however lost to Nikita Kraiouchkine in round 5. Nikita thus won the tournament with a perfect score of 5/5.
