Canadian Forces Fall 2014 Chess Tournament

The fourth Canadian Military Fall team tournament was held at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa on November 29, 2014. It was the first time that this tournament was held outside a military base. This gave the opportunity to team members to enjoy a free visit to the air museum between rounds.

Players coming from Ottawa, Valcartier, Montreal and Kingston participated for a total of 30 players; this was the largest  turnout since the tournament started. This quick tournament of 5 rounds (25 minutes + 5 seconds increment) is more informal than our National Championship and is a way to meet military chess comrades and have active service personnel playing alongside veterans. The fact that this is a team event enhances camaraderie and goes well with the «team spirit» that is found in military culture. The format is also a good manner to introduce newcomers to competitive chess.

Congratulation to Montreal (10.5/15) for taking the first place, ½ points ahead of the Ottawa team 1 (10/15). This was a great achievement for Montreal area players who will be hosting the 2015 Canadian Military Championship next spring.

Corporal Dominic Coulon from Valcartier achieved an excellent 5/5 and finished in first place one point ahead of Captain François Simard of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Captain Richard Moulton of Ottawa. These players were awarded a military coin of the 90th Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

The recruit of the tournament medal went to Officer-Cadet Alexandre Tanguay of Royal Military College of Canada (RMCC) Kingston. In fact, 9 Officer-Cadets from RMCC participated in the tournament and most of them were there for the first time. RMCC chess club is very active this year and this is promising for the future of chess in the Canadian Forces.

Many thanks to Nicole Drummond from Mortgage Broker at Dominion Landing Center for her continuing support to our tournaments and to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum for hosting us.
