7th Canadian Military Chess Championship

7th CANADIAN MILITARY CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

The 7th Canadian Military Chess Championship took place the week-end of the 11-12 April 2015 at Royal Military College (Collège Militaire Royal) St-Jean, Quebec. 35 players were competing for the title of Canadian Forces Chess Champion and one of the 6 spots on team Canada to the 26th NATO Chess Championship, to be hosted by The Netherlands in Amsterdam in July. In addition, bases were fighting for the best team award (total score of 3 players from same base or city).

Cyril Nerubenko (2132) from Halifax keep the Canadian Forces chess Champion title, winning his 6 games.

On the team competition, it was a tough competition and finally the Ottawa team took the lead only .5 points ahead of the former champion team, Valcartier, and one point ahead of the hosting team from Montreal.

There was also a Veterans Championship with 9 players, open to Canadian Forces Veterans and former Defence civilian employee. The new Veteran Champion is Cpl (ret) Gerald Aspler from Edmonton.
