Le Championnat ouvert de McGill a cette année encore été un succès indéniable : la participation a augmenté à 115 joueurs et les commanditaires ont été nombreux.

The McGill Open Championship was this year again a great success : 115 players showed up and sponsorship was bigger than ever.

Notre principal partenaire, la Fédération québécoise des échecs, a non seulement fourni tout le matériel nécessaire au tournoi, mais a également offert une inscription gratuite aux gagnants des sections B et C. De son côté, Jeff de Bruges a également commandité le tournoi cette année. Chaque participant a reçu une petite boîte de chocolats fins, et Léo Richard en a même remporté un panier d’une valeur de 150$, tiré parmi tous les participants.

Nous devons également souligner le généreux don de M. Hugh Brodie, qui a offert 1000$ pour le premier prix de la section A.

Our principal partner, the Quebec Chess Federation, not only provided us with the necessary material for the tournament, but also offered a free registration to the upcoming International Championships of French-speaking Countries (merged with the Quebec Open) to the winners of sections B and C. Meanwhile, Jeff de Bruges also sponsored the tournament. Every participant received a small box of chcoolates and Léo Richard even received a basket of chocolates worth $150 in a tombola.

We would also like to thank Mr. Hugh Brodie for his generous $1000 donation for the first prize of section A.

Le tournoi s’est quant à lui déroulé sans problème majeur, bien qu’un gardien de sécurité en retard a bien failli retarder le départ de la ronde 2.

La section A était sans contredit l’une des plus fortes de l’année, avec GM Sambuev, MI Hambleton, MI Duong (qui effectue un grand retour après une longue absence), MFs Gachet et Kleinman, et 7 maître nationaux. Après 5 rondes, deux joueurs sont émergés vainqueurs avec 4.5/5 : Aman Hambleton, qui a vaincu Bator Sambuev en ronde 4 et annulé contre Keith MacKinnon et  Hong Rui Zhu, la surprise du tournoi, qui a seulement échappé une nulle contre Marc-André Joanis, qui a pourtant près de 500 points de cote de moins. Après une partie Armageddon, Aman est sorti grand vainqueur et a remporté 1000$, laissant tout de même 700$ au jeune Hong Rui Zhu.

Également digne de mention est la performance de David Zhou (1879), qui a vaincu MN Kris Laptos et MN Olivier Kenta Chiku-Ratté, et même obtenu une position écrasante face à MN Zong Yang Yu.

The tournament itself went really smoothly, although a late security guard nearly delayed the start of round 2.

Section A was without any doubt one of the strongest this year, with GM Sambuev, IM Hambleton, IM Duong (who returned after a very long absence), FMs Gachet and Kleinman, and 7 national masters. After 5 rounds, two players emerged as victorious with 4.5/5 : Aman Hambleton, who defeated Bator Sambuev in round 4 and obtained a draw against Keith MacKinnon, and Hong Rui Zhu, the surprise of the tournament, who got held to a draw by Marc-André Joanis, rated 500 points lower. After an Armageddon game, Aman obtained the first prize ($1000), leaving a good amount of $700 to Hong Rui Zhu.

Also worth mentioning is David Zhou’s performance, who defeated NM Kris Laptos and NM Olivier Kenta Chiku-Ratté, and obtained a great position against NM Zong Yang Yu.

La section B a quant à elle été remporté par Paul Weston avec 4.5/5, suivi par Sam Marin d’Ottawa (4/5) et 7 joueurs à égalité avec 3.5/5.

Finalement, la section C a vu une triple égalité en première place entre Chen Xi Lin, Julia Kuleshova et Simon Legault (4.5/5). Chen Xi Lin remporte l’inscription gratuite aux Championnats de la Francophonie après départage à l’ordinateur.

Section B was won by Paul Weston with 4.5/5, followed by Sam Marin from Ottawa (4/5) and 7 players tied at 3.5/5.
Finally, section C saw a three-way tie in first place between Chen Xi Lin, Julia Kuleshova and Simon Legault (4.5/5). Chen Xi Lin won the free registration after computer tiebreaks.
