European Club Cup (Oct.18-24, 2015)

The European Club Cup continues in Skopje, Macedonia.

The Open section has 50 teams composed of the best players money can buy -- seven of the world's top ten -- including: #3 Topalov, #5 Giri, #6 Caruana, #17 Adams, #19 Radjabov, #21 Mamedyarov, #94 Rauf Mamedov and #95 Eltaj Safarli, who all play for the defending champions SOCAR.

Other notable players: #2 Nakamura, #7 Aronian, #9 Kramnik, #10 Grischuk, #11 Karjakin, #13 MVL and #14 Tomashevsky.

The women's section is noticably less competitive, with only 12 teams and four of the top 20 players.

Maybe Next Season...!?

It seems the Blue Jays picked the wrong starter in Game 4. They had a proven winner in Canadian WYCC team-member William Graif, who is undefeated against Kansas pitching. OTOH, all those wins come against KC starter Jeremy Guthrie, who is not pitching in the play-offs.

And they're all in chess.

World Youth and Cadets Chess Championship (Oct.24 - Nov.6, 2015)

Halkidiki, Greece, hosts the the 2015 World Championships for players under 18. There are 12 sections: Open and Girls, each with six age divisions: U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18.

Canada has 57 players registered. With entries still coming in, Canada's top seeds are:

WIM Qiyu Zhou (#1 seed in U16g)
IM Razvan Preotu (#3, U16)
Max Chen (#19, U8)
Maili-Jade Ouellet (#23, U14g)

I would be surprised if Nicholas Vettese does not dramatically outperform his #39 starting position in the U12.

Note: The annual event has changed its name -- adding "and Cadets" -- because next year the jumbo event will be split into two events: the U14, U16 and U18 will be in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia Sept. 1-15, 2016) and the U8, U10 and U12 will be in Batumi, Georgia, Oct. 18-30, 2016.
