BOTW 2016.04.23

Altibox Norway Chess
April 18-29, 2016

World Champion Magnus Carlsen heads a world-class field in Norway Chess, a 10-player RR which includes: #2 Vladimir Kramnik, #4 Anish Giri, #5 Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, #7 Lev Aronian, #12 Pavel Eljanov, #13 Pentala Harikrishna, #15 Li Chao, #16 Veselin Topalov, and qualifier Nils Grandelius.

World #8 Sergey Karjakin had agreed to play, but withdrew after winning the Candidates.

Carlsen has not won a major event in Norway, and played below his normal standard at the 2014 Tromsoe Olympiad, but started like he had something to prove: winning the pre-event blitz tournament 7.5/9, then jumping into the lead with 3/4 in the main event.

Rest days April 23 and 26. April 25 sees Carlsen as White against Giri, who he has never beaten.

Each player plays the others six times.

Games will be live from the St.Louis Club:
