2016 Niagara Falls Open
April 15-17, 2016.

32 chess players came on a beautiful April weekend and competed in the 12th Niagara Falls Open.

IM Artiom Samsonkin -- photographed playing CFC Executive Director Bob Gillanders in round 2 -- won clear first with 4.5/5 after taking a bye in the first round. IM Chedomir Micic and Carlos Javier Castro Bello tied for second and third with 4/5. Jesus Cuenca Gomez, Joseph Lentini and Benjamin Lin tied for fourth to sixth with 3.5 points.

Top Junior: Ronan Uthayakumar

 Keeping with traditions we also gave away 8 Upset Prizes this year in Memory of Joseph Bellomo and Mrs. Lise Wiseman.
3 extra non-cash prizes for the seniors group were donated.
The three ladies in the tournament each received a roll up board from John R. Brown in Memory of Mrs. Lise Wiseman.

 Roast beef sandwiches were served up every day and were as always enjoyed by all.

 

Toronto Closed
April 4 - May 30, 2016

The Toronto Closed is an eight-player RR, with a one game per week format. 

Mike Ivanov won on tie-break over FM Victor Plotkin, both with 5.5/7. Mark Plotkin was third with 5/7.

This year's average rating was an impressive 2289, which made Ivanov's TPR 2513.

2016 NS Open
May 13-15, 2016

Saint Mary's University in Halifax saw 31 players compete in the 2016 Nova Scotia Open.

Jason Manley, Adam Dorrance, Antoni Wysocki had a three-way tie for 1st with 4/5

4-way tie for 1st-4th: Lucas Dorrance, Leonardo Cui, Stephen LeBlanc, and Conrad MacNeil 3/5

Ontario Open
May 21-23, 2016

145 players came to the Annex Chess Club in Toronto to compete in the 2016 Ontario Open. The Crown section had 10 FIDE-titled players: GM Bator Sambuev; IM Nikolay Noritsyn, IM Artiom Samsonkin, IM Kaiqi Yang (CHI); FM Shiyam Thavandiran, FM Victor Plotkin, FM Michael Humphreys, FM Yuanchen Zhang, FM Michael Dougherty; and Olympiad team member WIM Qiyu Zhou.

IM Nikolay Noritsyn was clear first with 5/6, being held to draws by Mike Ivanov and FM Victor Plotkin. GM Bator Sambuev, IM Artem Samsonkin and FM Yuanchen Zhang tied for =2nd-4th with 4.5/6. 

U2200
William Li won with 5/6, ahead of Sergey Nalakhovets, Younan Ishoo and Women's Olympiad Team member Lali Agbabishvili, each with 4.5/6.

U1900
Scott Cliff and Dorian Kang tied for first with 5/6. Manojh Sivapathasundaram, Emanuel Pantazi, Jiarong (Alyssa) Zhu, and Adam Siegel were =3rd-6th with 4.5/6.

U1600
Maksym Gryn had a perfect 6/6 to win the 56-player U1600 section, a full point ahead of Eric Pei and Mark Brister.

Keres Memorial
May 21-23, 2016
Surrey BC

63 players entered the 2016 Paul Keres memorial in Surrey, BC. Top seeds in the Open section were three FMs: Oliver Schulte, Tanraj Sohal, and Kevin Gentes.

FM Tanraj Sohal won with 5/6, conceding draws to top seed FM Oliver Schulte and clear second place finisher Alfred Pechisker (4.5/6). Brian Mclaren alternated byes with wins until running into Sohal in the last round, ending clear 3rd with 4/6. Special mention goes to Harry Moore, who scored a 250-point upset win over FM Oliver Schulte (2436) in round five.

U2000
Brandon Zhu -- rated only 1549 -- won the U2000 with 5/6. Duncan Haines and Victor Zheng were =2nd-3rd with 4.5/5.

U1600
Matthew Ehrenreich won with 5/6. Ryan Leong, Ryan Branch and Clement Cheng were =2nd-4th with 4.5/6.

 

33rd Trumpeter Classic
May 21-22, 2016
Grand Prairie

28 players entered the 33rd Trumpeter Classic. Belsar Valencia and Butch Villavieja tied for first with 4.5/5, though remarkably they somehow managed to avoid playing each other!

Charlottetown Open
May 28-29, 2016

Thirteen players came out for the Charlottetown Open.
Tied for 1st were the 3rd and 4th seeds, Fred McKim and Kevin Bu (Unrated junior, new to Canada) - 4/5
