 The 2016 Edmonton International was a 10-player Invitational RR featuring: GMs Alexei Shirov (LAT), Surya Ganguly (IND), S P Sethuraman (IND), Sam Shankland (USA), and Bator Sambuev (CAN); IM Richard Wang (CAN); FMs Ian Findlay (CAN), Dale Haessel (CAN), Bitan Banerjee (IND), Belsar Valencia (PHI).

GM Sam Shankland (USA) won the 2016 Edmonton International. He scored 8/9, which was equalled by GM Surya Ganguly (IND), but Shankland won their individual game -- stopping Ganguly's 7/7 start -- to take the title on first tie-break.

Shankland conceded draws to top seed GM Alexei Shirov in the second round and Canadian IM Richard Wang in the final round to secure the win.

FM Bitan Banerjee (IND) scored an IM Norm with 4.5/9, which included draws with GMs Shirov, Sethuraman and Sambuev.
