Bilbao Chess Masters
July 13 - 23, 2016
A six-player double round robin in Bilbao featuring five of the world's top 11 players.
Many people are focusing on it as a mini-preview of the November World Championship match between title holder Magnus Carlsen and Challenger Sergei Karjakin. But given that neither player will likely show their opening prep for that match -- Karjakin has already said he won't play his main lines -- it might be more interesting as a preview of more distant World Championship matches, since the 25-year-old Champion is (for the first time?) older than half the field.
FIDE Ranking Player
#1 Magnus Carlsen
#6 Hikaru Nakamura
#7 Anish Giri
#9 Sergey Karjakin
#11 Wesley So
#44 Wei Yi
