2016 Calgary International
July 27, 2016 - August 1, 2016
IM Razvan Preotu won the 9th Calgary International.
He scored 7/9 to finish 1/2 a point ahead of GMs Kayden Troff and Gata Kamsky (both USA), and Gil Popilski (ISR).
This is the first time a Canadian has won the Calgary International outright. In 2008 IM Edward Porper and GM Anton Kovalyov (then, Argentina; now Canada) tied for 1st with 6.5/9. Previous Calgary International winners include: GMs Wesley So, Victor Mikhalevski (2x), Alex Lenderman, Dmitry Gurevich, and Anton Kovalyov.
Razvan scored +6 =2 -1 against opponents with an average rating of 2423 (August FIDE list). This equates to a TPR of 2645, and should earn him about 22 FIDE rating points, which will lift him to 2491: 9 points short of the 2500 rating he needs for the GM title.
IM Raja Panjwani drew with Kamsky in round 2 and beat Cuban GM Lazaro Bruzon in round 7, which put him on route to a GM norm; but losses to Preotu in round 8 and GM Popilski in round 9 left him with 5.5/9, tied with FM Olivier Kenta Chiku-Ratte and Daniel Kazmaier as the next highest-finishing Canadians.
The 2016 Calgary International took place July 27, 2016 - August 1, 2016 at the Calgary Chess Club. It was a 9-round swiss with five GMs entered: GM Gata Kamsky (USA), GM Lazaro Bruzon (CUB), GM Kayden Troff (USA), GM Victor Mikhalevski (ISR), GM Gil Popilski (ISR).
