A few Canadians participated at the 2nd DC International.
IM Bindi Cheng surprised many GMs and finished second with 7/9. This incredible performance would have been enough for a GM norm, but unfortunately he didn't play against a sufficient number of foreign players. A major tournament can be considered as a "super-swiss" if there is at least 20 foreign players, including at least 10 GMs, IMs, WGMs or WIMs. Unfortunately for Bindi, this was not the case. He will have another opportunity this summer, since the Quebec Open will be a super-swiss (the only one in Canada).
A few other players from Canada played in this tournament : FM Kleinman and FM-elect Sturt from McGill, IM Leonid Gerzhoy Yuanchen Zhang and James Chan.
For some of these players, the Washington International was only a warm-up for the biggest North-American tournament : the World Open. We will be able to follow closely their results next week. Canadian players have very often won lower sections of the World Open. Will it be the case this year?
