2016 WYCC
Sept. 20 - Oct. 4, 2016
Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia
The traditional WYCC has been split into two tournaments: this was the older half, while the World Cadet Chess Championship will be Oct. 18-31, 2016 in Batumi, Georgia, and will be for players U8, U10, and U12. As before, the World Youth Chess Campionship is an 11-round Swiss in six sections: U14, U16 and U18, both Open and Girls.
Canadian Team
Only six Canadian players went to the 2016 WYCC. This compares with 20 in the same age groups at the 2015 WYCC in Greece, and 11 to the 2014 WYCC in South Africa. The Canadian team, in the photo above (L2R) was: Rachel Tao, Maili-Jade Ouellet, Caleb Petersen, Michael Song, Eugene Hua, and James Li. HoD was Christina Tao, and captain was GM Alexander Cherniaev.
Results
Overall, the Canadian team underperformed, with Caleb Peterson being the only player to gain rating points, and James Li (who had no FIDE rating at the start) the only player to finish above his starting rank.
Two bright spots were Eugene Hua's draw with the eventual bronze medalist in round 3, and FM Michael Song's run at the podium: scoring 6/9 meant that he played mostly players in the top third of his section, including 3 top-10 finishers, but losses in his last two games kept him out of a medal position.
