The Quebec Chess Federation and the Just For Laughs festival have very often cooperated in the past. This year, thanks to this cooperation, Maïli-Jade Ouellet was invited to give a simul at the Complexe Desjardins (a huge shopping mall in Montreal).

As I was browsing my Facebook newsfeed the other day, I recalled that I still needed to find a game to annotate for this week's Game of the Week.
The Canadian Open is taking place in Ottawa, on July 13-20. It is a one-section 9 rounds swiss tournament, featuring 181 players, including 12 GMs and 18 IM/FM. They will be playing one game a day, fighting for the $5000 first prize (based on 200 entries).
IM Tomas Krnan surprised everyone by winning the International Championship of Slovakia 2013, earning at the same time a GM norm.

The Canadian Youth Chess Championship has started! This is a record-breaking event with 278 players.
IM Nikolay Noritsyn dominated the Open section, beating 5 masters on his way to a perfect 5/5 score, one full point point ahead of WIM Yuanling Yuan, clear second at 4/5

IM Bindi Cheng and IM Leonid Gerzhoy both ended up with 5.5/9 - winning $462.50 each. 6.5 was enough to win the Open section.
