International News Today - August 7, 2012

It's always news when Magnus Carlsen doesn't win a chess tournament. At Biel the official winner was Wang Hao who scored 19 points in the football system to finish 1 point ahead of Carlsen. However in the traditional scoring system, Carlsen would have had a one half point lead.... Anyway you cut it Magnus remains on top of the World. Tied for third were Anish Giri and Hikaru Nakamura with 16 points.

Gawain Jones won a two game rapid play-off match over Stephen Gordon to take the British Championship. David Howell was in thid 1/2 point behind.

Anton Korobov took the Ukranian Championship over a number of bigger names. Finishing tied for second a full point behind were Andrei Volotkin and Alexander Areshchenko. Further back were Ponomariov and Moiseenko.

The Russian Super-final has been a bit of a dud, with only 4 decisive games after 4 rounds in the 10 player event. As of this writing (round 5 in progress) Andreikin, Jakovenko, and Alekseev are all +1.
