Canadian Open News - July 15, 2011

After 6 rounds we again have a single leader, this time former Canadian Open Champion GM Walter Arencibia (CUB), with 5.5/6. In yesterday's top match-ups he defeated Leonid Gerzhoy, while Bator Sambuev with the black pieces was unable to do any better than draw with American Irina Krush.

Last night other interesting Cdn results were IM Artiom Samsonkin defeating GM Mikhaelski, IM Thomas Krnan defeating another IM, and FM Bindi Cheng drawing a GM.

Tonight's top match-ups are:
GM Sambuev (5) - GM Arencibia (5.5)
GM Benjamin (5) - IM Krush (5)
IM Samsonkin (5) - GM Shabalov (5)
IM Krnan (5) - GM Bluvshtein (4.5)

Tonight, Bator agains gets a chance to knock off the tournament leader with the white pieces, Irina and Artiom face GM's again and Mark gets another black, hoping to improve his luck on last night's game and get back in the hunt.

In lower board action, Canadians IM L.Gerzhoy, FM S.Thavandiran, FM R.Sapozhnikov, FM G.Milicevic, and NM L.Henry all go for GM scalps !!
