International News Today - Sept 20, 2011

It's becoming obvious that a daily update has proven sufficiently taxing, but I will continue with this thread, and try to get back on track.Peter Svidler has followed up his recent win in the Russian Super-Final with a victory in the World Cup of Chess. He defeated fellow Russian GM, Alexander Grischuk, by a score of 2.5-1.5. Both players qualify for the 2012 Candidates Tournament, along with Vassily Ivanchuk who captured 3rd place, by defeating Ruslan Ponomariov 2.5-1.5 in the consolation match. Ivanchuk takes part in the Grand Slam Finals (with Carlsen, Anand, Aronian, Nakamura, and Vallejo Pons) starting this weekend, while the other three are all taking part in the super strong European Club Cup Championships. The second Women's Grand Prix (Shenzhen, CHN) finished a couple of days ago, and Hou Yifan took 1st place with a score of 8/11, a full point ahead of Anna Muzychuk (SLO). This is the 2nd straight Grand Prix win for the teen aged Womens World Champion. The Kings vs Queens Tournament (Rapid & Rapid960) in St Louis, unfortunately saw the withdrawal of Judit Polgar due to her success at the World Cup. The Kings won 31.5-18.5. Top scorer for the Kings was Hikaru Nakamura 9.5, while the Queens were led by Alexandra Kosteniukwith 5.5.
