The CFC Regular Chess Post – Jan. 3/11 – Start of Year Top Canadian/Woman ( CFC ).

Looking at the top Canadians ( National/Women ) as of the last CFC rating update (Wed., Dec. 29 ) on the CFC website, we find the top as of Jan. 1, 2012 are:

National – GM Bator Sambuev ( 2702 ), Montreal, Quebec – 2011 Canadian Champion;

Women – WIM Yuanling Yuan ( 2328 ), Toronto, Ont. ( 17 years old )

At the half way mark at the Reggio Emelia event, Hikaru Nakamura has taken over 1st place with 11 points (3 wins and 2 draws). He is closely followed by Vassily Ivanchuk with 10 points. Others scores are - Morozevich 8, Giri 5, Vitiugov 4, Caruana 2. Play resumes tomorrow.

The Groningen Festival concluded with a tie for 1st between American Robert Hess and Ukranian Alexander Kovchan. Tiviakov (NED) and Zherebukh (UKR) were one half point behind.

The CFC Regular Chess Post – Jan. 10/12 – Canadian Winners - N.A.C.C..

Congrats to Canadian juniors, Tanraj Sohal and Jason Cao, both of BC. Both were Prize winners at the North American Chess Championships.

Tanraj was clear first in the U2300 section, winning $6,355.00!

I had intended to file reports on the outstanding events long before this, so I assume most of you have gone and checked on your own, but anyway here goes.

At the Reggio Emelia event, Hikaru Nakamura built up an almost insurmountable lead, but then lost his final three games to end up losing the title to Anish Giri by a one point margin. Alexander Morozevich and Fabiano Caruna tied with Nakamura for second. A 1st Super GM tournament victory by Giri.

After 4 rounds at the Tata Steel Super GM event, Magnus Carlsen and Levon Aronian are tied with 3/4. They are followed by Teimour Radjabov and Fabiano Caruana.

Right now it's about two hours into round 5. Aronian took a quick draw with black against Van Wely, while Carlsen has an advantage with white against Giri, just the kind of position that he often converts on.

The CFC Regular Chess Post – Jan. 23/12 - John Schleinich Memorial Result.

This tournament consisted of a number of 6-player round robin sections, with approximately equally rated players in each section. It was played Jan. 20-22 at the Calgary Chess Club and attracted 48 players.. The ratings of the top section ranged from 2203 to 2096. The winner, with 4/5 pts., was NM Alex Yam ( 2203 ), the highest rated player.

It's the final rest day at the Tata Steel event. Ove the past couple of rounds the spectators have been treated to some wild play. Watching on the tournament viewer I have to wonder if the large number of "blunders" is real or the results of the computer strength improving.

Levon Aronian emerged victorious at the 74th Tata Steel tournament in Netherlands on Sunday, with a final round draw to clinch 1st place. He finished a full point ahead of Magnus Carlsen, Teimour Radjabov, and Fabiano Caruana. There were some truly exciting games in the final few rounds of the tournament, and it was announced that it will be back again next year.

With his fine performance Caruana moves into 10th spot on the Live Ratings list, meaning that 5 of the top ten are under 25. I suspect this is a first !
