A wild finish at the World Team Championship over the weekend. Germany upset Armenia 2.5-1.5 to take the Gold Medal. Azerbaijan also won to take the silver medal, and Hungary steamrolled Bulgaria 4-0 to sneak ahead of Armenia and Russia on tie-breaks for the silver medal. Less dramatic finish was the Russian ladies winning handily their division.

CFC Website - Major Reworking

 CFC has been experiencing since the new CFC Website came onstream, periodic crashing, which appears related to database use. CFC has been working with our contract web developer, Resolution, to solve the problem.

Here is the latest update ( 11/11/16 ) from PEI CFC Governor, and Treasurer, Fred McKim, who is handling the new website file on behalf of the executive:

" we thought we had the problem of the CFC website crashing licked, however after two weeks of consecutive up-time it suffered a server shutdown over the weekend, due to heavy use on the database.

The CFC Regular Chess Post – Nov. 24/11 – WYCC Update/ St. John Fall Open.

WYCC Update

The WYCC started last Fri., Nov. 18 ( Rd. 1 ) and runs to Nov. 26 ( Rd. 9 ). It is being played in Caldas Novas, Brazil. Canada sent 40 juniors. Rd. 6 was played yesterday. Here are the 4 Canadian team members in the top ranks:

Chiku-Ratte, Olivier-Kenta ( Can. Champ. ) 2094 CAN 1 1 1 1 ½ ½ 5.0 1st In 9-way tie for 1st - U 12 Open

The 3rd round of the Tal Memorial finished a short while ago. The play to date has been fairly sharp with 6 decisive games and a lot of draws being of the exciting variety. Four players share 1st with +1 scores. They are Magnus Carlsen (who has had a couple of fascinating games yesterday and today), Levon Aronian, Sergey Karjakin, and Ian Nepomniachtchi.

Three rounds and plenty of action at the Tal Memorial, since I last checked in (playing in the PEI Open over the weekend curtailed any of this activity). However, despite complicated games with lots of interesting chances the games have all been drawn. This means that Carlsen, Aronian, Karjakin, and Nepomniachtchi are all still tied for 1st. Catch the games tomorrow on any of the live servers starting at 7am ET.

I just finished watching the end of the Aronian-Svidler game. Beautiful piece sac by Aronian in a Q&N ending eventually left him with passers on b6 and h6 that couldn't both be stopped. This leaves him alone in 1st with 5/8 going into the final round. Only 1/2 point behind are Carlsen, Karjakin, Ivanchuk, and Nepomniachtchi. Aronian has black tomorrow against Nepo. Karjakin is white against Ivanchuk and Carlsen is black against Nakamura.

Getting caught up:

Magnus Carlsen won his final round game to move into a tie with Levon Aronian at the Tal Memorial. Carlsen won the title on tie-break (most blacks).

As suspected, Hou Yifan was able to draw the 8th match game and retain the World Women's title with a score of 5.5-2.5.

The World Youth is complete. Russia was the dominant country with a total of 7 medals. Michael Song from the Toronto area took home the bronze medal in U12.
