Canadian Game of the Week

GOTW : GM Alexandr Fier vs Robert Sasata

This week's game comes from the Grand Pacific Open 2016, which finished last week. In the third round, Robert Sasata sacrificed two pawns on the Black side of a Schliemann against GM Alexandr Fier. He had great compensation though, and White eventually had to give back the material and simplify in a balanced endgame. A very well-played game from both sides.

GOTW: FM Dougherty vs. GM Marin

John Upper found me an excellent candidate for this week's game of the week, and, trust me, this one doesn't disappoint!

GOTW : Bator Sambuev vs Olivier-Kenta Chiku-Ratte

This week's game was played in the 4th round of the Quebec Carnaval Tournament, where tournament leader and eventual winner GM Bator Sambuev built up a promising attack against FM Olivier-Kenta Chiku-Ratte, before rushing with a piece sacrifice that could have backfired. Black chooses the wrong continuation and immediately gets punished. Enjoy!

GOTW: Dale Haessel vs GM Hannes Stefansson (Reykjavik)

This week, I have chosen a game played at the Reykjavik Open played by Alberta's Dale Haessel against GM Hannes Stefansson. This game has an interesting pawn structure that dictates the flow of the game and features missed opportunities by both players.

GOTW: Kenney,J vs. FM Cao,J

From the third round of the BC Open comes an opening trick to remember... and it leads to Jason Kenney's defeat of FM Cao in a 22-move miniature. I know what you're thinking - not another game from the BC Open - but this one should not be missed.

GOTW: F. Caire vs A. Hambleton (Carnaval 2016)

This week, I present to you a game played at the Carnaval Winter Open played in Quebec City. This game features a master playing White against an IM playing Black. In this game, at certain points, Black does not play the objectively best move, and instead tries to keep winning chances.

GOTW : Tanraj Sohal vs Jason Cao

In the 5th round of the recently concluded BC Open, Tanraj Sohal played an exemplary attacking game with the White pieces. After a few inaccuracies from his opponent in the opening, he obtained a dangerous initiative on the kingside and never put a foot wrong. A very impressive display!

GOTW: Kagaoan vs. Doknjas,J

Time for some excitement... This week's game from the 2nd round of the ongoing BC Open features 1.g4 (leading to a losing position out of the opening), but the White player fights back and makes it to a rook endgame. The old adage about "all rook endgames are drawn" holds true once more. Check it out!

GOTW : Valentin Prahov vs Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux

This week's game is from the Pere Noel tournament. The young FM Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux played an interesting pawn sacrifice against NM Valentin Prahov, which led to an unclear game in which both players had their chances.

GOTW: Emile Trottier vs Aquino Inigo (CUCC)

This week, I have decided to analyze another game played at the CUCC; this time between McMaster and U de M. This game was an interesting positional battle, where the lower rated white player was able to outplay his opponent. Hopefully you'll enjoy the analysis; you'll see how subtle positional mistakes were quite costly.
