Canadian Game of the Week

Game of the Week : Wenxuan Zhong vs Daniel Trahan (Quebec Open)

Thanks to Hugh Brodie and Luc Gauthier, we now have over 900 games from the Quebec Open on Canbase. I chose one of these games for the GOTW, and I believe you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Game of the Week: Leonid Gerzhoy vs Thomas Krnan (Canadian Closed)

For this game of the week, I chose to annotate the critical last round encounter at the Canadian Closed between Leonid Gerzhoy and Thomas Krnan. In this game, White chooses an uncommon opening, and faces certain problems after the opening. I hope you find it instructive.

Game of the Week : Hans Jung vs Eric Hansen (Canadian Closed)

This week's game is from the first round of the Canadian Closed. While I usually choose games showing a good fight from both sides, this week's game is rather one-sided. Still, it shows how a grandmaster can exploit the slightest inaccuracy in the opening to secure a quick win.

Game of the Week : Hairan Liang vs Christopher Pace (Aurora Summer Open 2015)

This week's game is particularly complicated, and both players should not feel bad about the mistakes they made as it seemed like every inaccuracy was enough to turn the tables. Still, I believe readers will enjoy the game.

Game of the Week: GM Bareev vs. GM Lesiege

This week, I present a very exciting rapid game featuring former top-5 player GM Evgeny Bareev and Canada's GM Alexandre Lesiege. The FQE sponsored a rapid match between these two players which marked Alexandre's return to the chess scene.

Game of the Week : Kevin Pacey vs Francesco Dunne (Eastern Ontario Open)

It is hard to overlook a game in which 4 queens are on the board simultaneously. This game features an exciting opening, middlegame and endgame.

Game of the Week : Richard Chen vs Sammy Yao (Aurora Spring op)

This week's GOTW shows very interesting openings ideas by Black in a modern defense that quickly lead him to a good position. However, finding a plan was not easy and Black unfortunately failed to find the necessary counterplay.

Game of the Week: Hansen, E - Lujan, C

This week, I present to you Eric Hansen's round 8 game played at the Continental Chess Championships. This game shows a clean transformation of a positional advantage to a win.

Game of the Week: GM Hansen vs. Muniz

Canada's second highest rated player, GM Eric Hansen, traveled to Uruguay to participate in this year's Continental Championship. While he was aiming for a World Cup spot and ultimately came up short, he still played a good tournament.

Game of the Week : Léo Richard vs Denis Pilon (McGill Open)

The Game of the Week typically involve some of Canada's strongest players. However, this week's game features a young promising player, Léo Richard, who showed great attacking skills and good opening theory knowledge. We have very little doubt that his name will come up again soon!
