Canadian Game of the Week

WYCC Gold Medal Game

The Gold Medal Game from the final round of the 2014 WYCC U14g.

Qiyu Zhou - A.Eswaran, 2014 WYCC

Qiyu Zhou has been playing fantastic chess and has a very important game tomorrow to decide her final finish: a win guarantees her the World Youth Chess Championship for U14 girls.

I have annotated her sixth round game against an American, Ashritha Eswaran. - Notes by FM Michael Kleinman

Game of the Week : Hong Rui Zhu vs IM Aman Hambleton (Montreal Open)

This week features a nice game by IM Aman Hambleton against Hong Rui Zhu at the Montreal Open. Aman played a nearly perfect game with the Black pieces, taking advantage of every innaccuracy of his opponent. It didn't take long before White got completely squeezed.

Game of the Week : FM Munro vs FM Nicula (Montreal Open)

The participants were very well treated...

Game of the Week - Rutter vs. Baron

I came across an interesting game from Manitoba back in May. In it, the Black player missed a number of chances to put the game away, but, as so often happens, he was the last one to make a mistake and White seized his chance and won. There are some instructive positional inaccuracies to note as well.

Game of the week : Kraiouchkine-Libersan

This game of the week comes from the Canadian Open. Hugh Brodie and Luc Gauthier once again did an incredible job and entered over 500 games. This one is definitely worth watching. Nikita Kraiouchkine, one of Quebec's wildest players, played a very nice sacrifice in the opening.

Game of the Week - Itkin vs. Kraiouchkine

The U2400 section at this year's Canadian Open ended with IM Jean Hebert taking the top spot with 7.5/9 followed closely by Nikita Kraiouchkine in a 3-way tie (with IM Michael Klenburg and Jeff Reeve) for second place with 7/9.

Game of the Week : Kristen Li vs Indy Ma (CYCC U16/U18G)

Here's one of the most interesting games from this year's CYCC. Both players seemed to be constantly looking for the most complicated variations, but the advantage kept switching side.

Game of the Week: IM Ruiz Sanchez vs. GM Van Kampen

Although neither of the players in this week's game is Canadian, I figured I could get away with showing you this game since it was one of the most exciting games from this year's Canadian Open in Montreal.

Game of the Week : IM Sevian vs FM Cao (Canadian Open)

The strongest U14 in the World, IM Samuel Sevian, played against FM Jason Cao from British-Columbia, one of the few Canadians who won the World Champion title in the World Youth Chess Championships.
