Canadian Game of the Week

Game of the Week : Hong Rui Zhu vs Thierry Libersan

The Laval Open Chess Championship was held from June 20 to June 22 in Laval (near Montréal, QC), with $2700 in prizes. Here's the game that allowed the young Hong Rui Zhu to seize the second place in the top section (behind Olivier-Kenta Chiku-Ratté, of the same age).

Game of the Week: FM Preotu vs. GM Gareyev

There are a number of Canadians having good tournaments at the World Open in Virginia, but especially impressive is Razvan Preotu who is on track for an IM norm with his 4/6 against very strong opposition. Watch as he takes down a player just outside of the top 100 in the world.

Game of the Week : Panjwani vs So

This week's game is from the Edmonton International, one of the few annual norm tournaments in Canada (along with the Quebec Open and the Calgary International). This game between the young star GM Wesley So and a promising Canadian IM, Raja Panjwani will definitely entertain you.

Game of the Week: Sambuev vs. Kraiouchkine

GM Bator Sambuev is the winningest chess players in the Candian swiss tournament circuit in recent memory, and it is through wins such as the following against a strong master that he achieves such success. Watch him convert a suspect position after a less than optimal opening into a (relatively) risk-free win.

Game of the Week: Cloutier vs Rondon

Here's an interesting Sicilian played at the Montreal Chess Club. Black decided to go for a variation rarely seen in Quebec, the dynamic Classical Variation.

Game of the Week: Zhao, Y vs. Nicholson, M

The featured game follows a King's Gambit played by Steinitz with success back in 1864. Unfortunately for the White player, this time, things didn't go as well as they did 150 years ago...

Game of the Week : Henry vs Minzak (Junior Grand Prix IV)

This game features players with a much lower rating than usual. Yet, it is extremely interesting to analyze it for amateur players or coaches. It perfectly demonstrates how some young players will often play the logical move, without really thinking about why it is a good move.

Game of the Week: Sohal vs. Villavieja

From the top board in the 4th round of this year's BC Open is a game between two masters who manage to make an Exchange Slav exciting! A cursory glance might lead you to believe that White led the whole way, and, while true to some extent, Black had an equal position at various points.

Game of the Week : Sambuev vs Sturt (Analysis by Raven Sturt)

This edition of the Game of the Week will be slightly different, with an analysis by Raven Sturt of his win against GM Sambuev at the McGill Open.

Game of the Week: MacKinnon vs. Zhou, Qiyu

The McGill Chess Club hosted the McGill Open this past weekend. The tournament was a big success with approximately 110 players. In the last round, I was paired against Qiyu Zhou, a very strong young player from Ottawa. One of her other wins has previously been posted as a GOTW.
