Canadian Game of the Week

Game of the Week - Yam, A vs. Wang, R

This week, we take a look at a short and sweet game from the Alberta Closed this past spring. A tactical flourish in a confusing opening leads to an early mistake by Canada's youngest IM which results in White obtaining a very strong initiative which he eventually converts to the full point.

CCN Sept 2013 Teaser: Sambuev - Preotu, CoQ, 2013

The Sept CCN is finished and should be arriving in your email soon. This month's teaser: Sambuev - Preotu (COQ, 2013), with Razvan's notes.

Game of the Week - Levkovsky vs. Chiku-Ratte

Please welcome FM Louie Jiang as a new contributor to this column. Starting this week, Louie and I will be annotating games in alternate weeks. The game he chose to analyze this week is from a weekly event held in Montreal. It features an interesting Modern Benoni which leads to exciting play from both players.

Game of the Week - Qin vs. Khashper

The Montreal Open was held at Brebeuf College over the weekend, and GM Bator Sambuev, fresh off his trip to the World Cup, was once again victorious. The game chosen for this week's GOTW, however, is between third-place finisher Joey Qin and Arkady Khashper.

Game of the Week - Roussel-Roozmon vs. Arencibia

This past weekend's Labour Day events are over, but without available games, I have had to choose a game from this summer's Quebec Open Invitational section. But fear not, I found some real excitement in the following grandmaster game. Take a look!

Game of the Week - Sapozhnikov vs. Humphreys

Looking back at games from this spring, I was really intrigued by a game in the French Tarrasch from the Toronto Closed where White's daring pawn play was not rewarded. His early pawn sacrifice in a somewhat theoretical line just didn't turn out well at all. Try to find out where it all goes wrong!

Game of the Week - Knox vs. Qin

The North American Youth Championship in Toronto appears to be a big success, and this week's game comes from the sixth round between Canadian juniors Christopher Knox and Joey Qin. A King's Indian Defense gone wrong for White gives Black a strong queenside attack, and you'll have to see the game to find out more!

Game of the Week - Sambuev vs. Morozevich

Although this week's game isn't exactly a "Canadian" game in that it wasn't played in Canada, it deserves to be shown as it is the biggest upset of GM Bator Sambuev's career. A very exciting back-and-forth game from the first round of the World Cup in Tromso, Norway, goes his way against one of the world's best.

Game of the Week - Le Dorze vs. Kernetsky

Hi, all. I hope you enjoyed your long weekend (for those of you outside of Quebec). After my annotations of games from the big Canadian tournaments this summer, we have a game from the monthly TNT series in Winnipeg. Take a look at a game where a pawn weakness dictates play and eventually determines the result.

Game of the Week - Kraiouchkine vs. Kiewra

It's not over until it's over... That is the theme to this week's game from this year's Quebec Open between Nikita Kraiouchkine and IM Keaton Kiewra. Take a look at a game where even a master fails to win a completely winning position up a queen!
