Canadian Game of the Week : Kaifeng Yu (CHN) - Luke Pulfer (CAN)

A great win for one of Canada's biggest hopes for a medal at this year's World Youth Chess Championships in the United Arab Emirates is Luke Pulfer's win over FM Kaifeng Yu in the sixth round. Luke stands at 5.5/7 and we wish him all the best in the rest of event. Check out this exciting upset!

I am replacing FM Louie Jiang this week in order to analyze a game from the WYCC. The choice was difficult, as Team Canada had quite a lot of nice victories.

From this autumn's RA Fall Open is an educational Shveshnikov Sicilian. Unlike the wild games typically seen resulting from this opening, today's feature is a slower-paced strategic battle. There are many lessons to be learned here!

It's a bit of a stretch to call this week's game "Canadian", so I hope you'll all forgive me. Raven Sturt, my teammate on the McGill Chess Team, played in a simul at the Marshall Chess Club back in June of 2012. There, he faced the new World Champion, Magnus Carlsen, who was already world #1.

Louie Jiang presents a great fight between two of Canada's strongest players from last month's Third Annual Fall Festival in Dearborn, Michigan. Strong play late in the game proved to be the decider in this week's game. Pay special attention to Kovalyov's endgame!

There were many interesting games at this year's Montreal Open, and the one I've chosen to consider this week features a veteran player employing a "young man's" opening (the Grunfeld) against Quebec's newest and youngest master. Oh, the irony... just kidding. Enough bad jokes; on to the chess!

At the annual RA Fall Open in Ottawa, a rarely seen stalemate theme occurred in an otherwise easily winning position. White's play throughout the game was not superb, yet he found a creative way to obtain best chances at salvaging a draw. Take a look!

This week's game features two experienced masters battling it out at a weekly event here in Montreal. A seemingly quiet unorthodox opening leads to some interesting middlegame complications. There are some important lessons about pawn structure to be learned from this one.
