Canadian Game of the Week

Game of the Week: Pamwar,M vs. Armstrong,R

It's been a while since my last GOTW, but exams are now over so I'm back to show you interesting Canadian games! This week, I featured an amateur game played at the Annex Chess Club where a fast-improving player, rated 1000, missed a forced mate against a long-time Toronto chess figure.

Game of the Week : Nikulich vs Ming

I replace FM Louie Jiang this week by analyzing a nice game between Oleksandr Nikulich and Wenyang Ming at the Père-Noël (Santa Claus) tournament in Montreal.

Game of the Week: Kazmaier vs. WGM Vojinovic

Daniel Kazmaier is one of the Canadian players who had a solid performance at the Reykjavik Open this year. He collected a cool 21 FIDE points helped by this 29-move last-round win against a Woman Grandmaster from Serbia. The game proceeds fairly slowly until Black's King gets stuck in the middle of the board.

Game of the Week: Abrahams vs. GM Li Chao

If you've been following Canadian chess recently, you will have noticed that the Reykjavik Open attracted a large Canadian contingent.

Game of the Week: Zhu, H vs. Yu, Z

This week, I bring you a very strange game from the U16 section of the recent Quebec Youth Chess Championships. The closed game evolved from a Maroczy Bind gone wrong and featured interesting King marches from Kingside to Queenside.

Game of the Week: GM Mekhitarian vs. IM Porper

Today, Louie Jiang brings us the dynamic Semi-Slav played by IM Edward Porper as Black against GM Mekhitarian in the 9th round at Gibraltar. A small error on Black's thirteenth move led to an inferior position in which White was able to play a better position with very little risk.

Game of the Week: GM Hansen,E vs. GM Agdestein,S

This week's GOTW comes from the recently concluded Gibraltar Chess Festival in which a number of Canadians competed successfully. GM Eric Hansen was Canada's top scorer at 7.0/10 to tie for 10th place in what was one of his best tournaments to date.

Game of the Week: MacKinnon vs. Gonsalves

It might seem somewhat vain, but I've chosen to annotate my last round win from the Canadian University Championship for this week's GOTW. I was finally back in the groove after a bit of a tournament hiatus. The game features a razor-sharp Dragon Yugoslav Attack and I believe that it provides good educational value.

Game of the Week - Kleinman vs. Mai

From this year's Canadian University Chess Championships comes one of the best wins played by FM Michael Kleinman (second board of the McGill team) over Lloyd Mai of the University of Ottawa. The game is a great example of domination and how to disallow counterplay. See Louie Jiang's comments below!

Game of the Week: Larochelle, M vs. Lawson, E

I hope that everyone had a good holiday season. This week, I chose a game played at the Pere Noel tournament in Montreal just after Christmas. IM Eric Lawson, returning from a long chess hiatus, tied for second in the event behind GM Bator Sambuev.
