Canadian Game of the Week

Game of the Week : Alan Luo vs Daniel Pomerantz (Varennes)

This game features a nice classical Sicilian between a young player from Montreal (Alan Luo) and a lecturer at McGill University (Daniel Pomerantz). White quickly got an interesting position, but made some bad decisions at critical moments of the game.

Game of the Week - Chernik,D vs. Hua,E

11-year-old Eugene Hua won a nice game with the Black pieces in the final round of the Aurora Fall Open back in October to finish off a successful tournament with 3/5. Have a look, and take note of the pins that both players were under late in the game!

Game of the Week : Arthur Ripoll vs Daniel Pelletier (Montcalm)

This week's GOTW features an explosive game played in Quebec City. Black had a terrible opening and seemed to be doomed to a painful loss, but continued fighting and soon managed to turn the tables...

Game of the Week : NM Ng vs FM Humphreys (Calgary International)

This week's game was played at the Calgary International, one of the few norm tournaments in Canada. This game shows how perseverance in a seemingly draw position can often pay off, even if it relies on some help from the opponent. A perfect example of "Cat and Mouse".

Game of the Week: Preotu, R - Durarabayli, Y

This week, I present to you another game played by Razvan Preotu from the Spice Cup where he scored his second GM norm. I chose to annonate a second game of his for several reasons: he has been playing fantastic chess, and scoring great results. Hopefully the public (and me too) can learn from his games.

Game of the Week : WFM Qiyu Zhou vs Thierry Libersan (Quebec Amateur)

This great game was played at the 2014 Quebec Amateur Championships. For once, Qiyu Zhou was on the losing side, although she still managed to put up a solid fight. Sicilian fans will definitely love the game and might get some new attacking ideas :)

Game of the Week - Caire vs. Hirschberg

There is a new strong player on the Montreal chess scene; FM Valerian Hirschberg has been playing in a number of local tournaments, and it's nice to see a new face in the crowd.

Bator Sambuev vs Razvan Preotu

This week I present you a game by Bator Sambuev and Razvan Preotu at the recently concluded Aurora Fall Open. Not only was ths game was important in deciding the eventual tournament winner, but it was interesting as well. Enjoy.

Game of the Week : Maïli-Jade Ouellet vs Akshita Gorti (WYCC)

There was a lot of coverage of Qiyu's performance at the WYCC, but other Canadians fared well. Maïli-Jade also lead her section for some time, before losing three games in a row.
