Canadian Game of the Week

Game of the Week : Nicholas Vettese vs Wenlu Yu (Aurora Open)

This week's game is incredibly tactical and fun to watch. No one could have predicted the outcome of the game!

Game of the Week: Anton Kovalyov vs Sandro Mareco (World Cup)

This week, I chose to annotate a beautiful game played by Anton Kovalyov in the second round of the world cup. Throughout the game, he showed a superior understanding of the position than his opponent and employed phophylaxis quite nicely at the end of the game. I hope you enjoy it!

Hansen annotates: Eljanov - Hansen, 2015.

With GM Pavel Eljanov's continuing success in FIDE's Baku World Cup, I thought it might be nice to see one of his games against a Canadian. GM Eric Hansen annotates his round 9 game from the 2015 Reykjavik Open.

Game of the Week : Sam Marin vs Zachary Dukic (RA Fall Open Ottawa 2015)

This week's game is definitely for tactics lovers. The game got very complicated very fast, and the outcome was very hard to predict!

Game of the Week: FM Chiku-Ratte vs. GM Roozmon

Olivier-Kenta has made big gains in his chess recently, and he tied for second at this year's Montreal Open this past weekend behind GM Sambuev. A key game on his way to 4/5 was his nice third round win again GM Roussel-Rouzmon.

Game of the Week : NM Steve Bolduc vs WGM Nino Maisuradze (Quebec Open)

In this week's game, White managed to completely squeeze Black and dictate the game. It is a great example of a situation where the initiative was much more important than the material

Game of the Week: Shamsiddin Vokhidov vs Zong Yang Yu (U16 Olympiad)

This week I chose to annotate a game played at the recently concluded u16 Olympiad. It features Zong Yang Yu, Canada's first board, playing a higher rated opponent with the black pieces. He chooses a positional sub-variation of the dragon and proceeds to outplay his opponent quite convincly, constantly putting his pieces on better squares than his opponent. Enjoy.

Game of the Week : Robert Gelblum vs Halldor Palsson (RA November Op)

This week's game is a bit older than usual (from November 2014), but has a lot to teach!

Game of the Week : Yuanchen Zhang vs Terry Song (2015 NAYCC)

This week's game is a fascinating Najdorf variation of the Sicilian defense. As it is often the case in these positions, both players were clearly winning at some point, but lost control over the position because of inaccuracies.

Game of the Week: Oussedik vs. IM Hambleton

A rising player on the Canadian chess scene is Elias Oussedik from New Brunswick. Even as a medical student, his chess is improving, and he's been showing chess at a strong FM level all summer. However, in the following game, he took a hard knock against IM Aman Hambleton.
