Canadian Game of the Week

Game of the Week: Mai,L vs. Dunne,F

There were a number of upsets at last week's Canadian University Chess Championships. In my experience, I've found that upsets are often caused by blunders made by the higher opponent - they are rarely the result of being outplayed positionally.

GOTW : Peter Vavrak vs Mark Plotkin (Hart House)

Here is another game from the recent Hart House Holiday tournament. Black played a pretty accurate game and showed how patience can be extremely important in some positions.

Song, M vs Preotu, R: Hart House Winter Open. GOTW

This week, I present to you a game played at the recently concluded Hart House Open. It is an interesting and unclear game where both sides had opportunities to seize the initiative. I hope you enjoy it, and happy holidays!

GOTW : Eric Hansen vs David Martins (London FIDE Open)

This week's game is from the London FIDE Open, in which Eric Hansen tied for 2nd place. Eric carefully positionned all his pieces and prepared a very nice trap for his opponent.

GOTW : Olivier Kenta Chiku-Ratte vs Hong Rui Zhu (Varennes Open 2015)

It was not my intention to use two of Olivier's games for the GOTW, but this one could not be overlooked. It's not every day a strong national master loses in 18 moves!

Game of the Week: Oussedik vs. Saunders

One Maritime chess player making large strides in his chess is my good friend, Elias Oussedik.

GOTW : Jonathan Turcotte vs FM Chiku-Ratté (Varennes 2015)

This week's game is from the Varennes Open Championship, a major tournament in Quebec. This year, there was a guaranteed prize fund of $10 000. This game features a good attempt from an expert to draw a strong FIDE master. While his efforts were unsuccessful, there is a lot to learn from this game.

GOTW: Pere Garriga vs Adam Dorrance. WYCC u18

This week, I chose to analyse one of Adam Dorrance's game from the recently concluded WYCC. Adam put in a strong performance and is gaining around 150 fide rating points. I decided to annotate his last round game against a higher rated player. Adam played quite solid, and even outplayed his opponent with the Black pieces and gained some winning chances. Enjoy!

Game of the Week : FM Jason Cao vs Alfred Pechisker (BC Ch.)

This game is extremely tactical and instructive. Both players played a fair amount of good moves, but also quite a lot of mistakes (but that is to be expected in such positions!). I am convinced everybody will love going through it as much as I did.

Game of the Week: FM Milicevic vs. L. Robichaud

This year's Montreal Open drew out a number of inactive players, including FM Goran Milicevic. I chose to annotate his last round game against a strong expert of the Montreal chess scene, Louis Robichaud.
