The Canadian Game of the Week comes from round 7 of the 2016 Women's Olympiad in Baku. In the diagram, Canada's Maili-Jade Ouellet has Black against Slovenia's Caterina Leonardi. What's better: ...Rc4 or ...Nb4. One wins, the other allows an incredible draw.

Lefong Hua scores first IM Norm

Canadian FM Lefong Hua earned his first IM Norm in the 2016 Autumn Invitational at the St.Louis Chess Club, November 17-22, 2016.
Lefong scored 6.5/9 to tie atop the IM Norm group with US FM Konstantin Kavutskiy, each earning an IM Norm.

Our Game of the Week is Canadian Women's Champion Qiyu Zhou's crazily complicated Ruy Lopez from round 6 against WIM Ayelen Martinez from Argentina.
It is White to move in the diagram. White had played a strong Novelty on move 19 to improve on a Judit Polgar game, and Black (Qiyu) has just played 21...d5 to get some counterplay in the center. What should White play now?

The third Millionaire Open was held in Atlantic City in August. It promised large prizes for section winners -- even the U1600 winner would pocket over $10,000 -- topped by a chance to win a 1/64 chance to win $1,000,000.

Our Canadian Game of the Week comes from the 2016 World Cadet Chess Championship, now on in Batumi, Georgia until October 30.
The position is Black to play from the game Atanasov (CAN) - Ansat (KAZ), U8 round 4.
Try to play as well as these Under 8 boys and figure out what happens after 16...d4 17.Bh6...

GOTW: Le Siège - Massé, Varennes 2016

Our Canadian Game of the Week is Alexandre Le Siège's annotations to his win over Hugues Massé at October's Varennes Open, which Alexandre won with 4.5/5.

The diagrammed position arose at move 17. Neither King can be attacked and there are no tricky tactics, but this is a critical position: White has a slight development advantage but has to find a plan which turns that into a long-term positional/endgame advantage. Alex's notes show how both sides should play.

The Canadian Women's Championship (Zonal 2.2) ran September 22-25, 2016 at the RA Centre in Ottawa.
The key game between the #1 and #2 seeds was in the fourth round. WIM Qiyu Zhou annotates her round 4 win over WIM Agnieszka Matras-Clement.
