Three strong Canadian players (GM Kovalyov, IMs Hambleton and Calugar) were playing in the University of Texas at Dallas Fall Open. They were competing against 11 GMs and 12 IMs (out of 44 players). Kovalyov placed first at 7/9 (undefeated), half a point ahead of Russian GM Andrey Stukopin.
This game features a nice classical Sicilian between a young player from Montreal (Alan Luo) and a lecturer at McGill University (Daniel Pomerantz). White quickly got an interesting position, but made some bad decisions at critical moments of the game.
White has the ideal d4-e4 center and better development.
Should Back counter in the center with ...c5 or is something else better?
Kramnik's opponent, GM Stelios Halkias, managed to obtain a draw in the first round.
Eric Hansen won his first round at the Qatar Masters Open, Nov. 25 - Dec. 5.

11-year-old Eugene Hua won a nice game with the Black pieces in the final round of the Aurora Fall Open back in October to finish off a successful tournament with 3/5. Have a look, and take note of the pins that both players were under late in the game!
The World Championship Match came to an end earlier today as Vishy Anand, one game behind, needed a win in one of the last two games of the twelve games match but lost game 11, giving Carlsen a match-ending lead of 2 points with one game to go.
The final score is 6.5-4.5, or 3-1.
