Tactics: Castling into it

This week's Canadian Chess Tactic comes from the U8 girls section of this summer's CYCC. The game started quitely with the Giuoco Piano, but caught fire when White castled into Black's kingside pawn storm. Can you find Black's best finish?

179 players at the Montreal Open!

179 players showed up at the College Brebeuf, up from 153 last year. GM Sambuev, IM Hambleton and IM Hebert, among others, will be fighting for the $1100 section A first prize.

Game of the Week - Rutter vs. Baron

I came across an interesting game from Manitoba back in May. In it, the Black player missed a number of chances to put the game away, but, as so often happens, he was the last one to make a mistake and White seized his chance and won. There are some instructive positional inaccuracies to note as well.

Canadian Representatives at upcoming FIDE events

The Women's World Championship is coming up really soon (October 11-31), although the tournament site has not been announced yet.

Razvan Preotu : Canada's next IM!

Razvan earned his final IM norm at the US Masters in Greensboro, North Carolina. One of his norms also counts as a GM norm, so he can already aim for the grandmaster title!

Tactics: Chucky Eats Studies for Dessert

GM Vassily Ivanchuk shows Edmonton dinner-mates a challenging problem for dessert. Can you solve it?
Hint: the photo shows the problem partially solved. The full problem follows.
