Canadian team at the U16 Olympiads in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia (Aug, 19-29)

5 Canadian players arrived in Mongolia to represent Canada at the U16 Olympiads. Last year, Canada sent three teams to the Olympiads in Hungary. Good luck to all!

Several videos were released this week by the Associated press, some of them being related to chess.
One video even features GM Spassky against IM Hébert at the Chess Olympiads (1978).

 

IM norm for Jason Cao!

FM Jason Cao scored an IM norm at the DC International (he was in fact assured of a norm after round 8) with a score of 6/9. GM Kovalyov tied for 5th with 6.5/9, while FM Yuanchen Zhang finished with 5.5/9.

Kovalyov qualifies for the World Cup at the Continental Championship

The Continental Chess Championship was held in Uruguay from May 15 to 24. This championship qualifies four players for the World Cup. The two Canadian participants GM Anton Kovalyov and Hansen did well, tying for third and 12th out of 80 with respective scores of 8/11 and 7.5/11. 

Yuanling Yuan wins her first game at the World Championship

Yuanling Yuan, Canada's strongest female player, is representing us at the Women's World Championship in Sochi, Russia.

Razvan Preotu and Magnus Carlsen in Reykjavik

It's not everyday that you get to meet the World Champion, but IM Razvan Preotu, arguably Canada's most promising junior player, had this chance in Reykjavik.

Andrea Botez wins the Susan Polgar's National Tournament (U14G)

Andrea Botez placed first in the U14G section of Susan Polgar's National Open for Boys and Girls rencently with 5.5/6 at only 12 years old.

Tomashevsky shines at the Tbilisi FIDE Grand Prix

After 9 of the 11 rounds at the Tbilisi Grand Prix, Evgeny Tomashevsky has forged himself a 1.5 points priority on runner-up Jakovenko. With 5 wins and 4 draws for 7 poins, Tomashevsky is the only player to have more than three wins.
