IM Razvan Preotu, the 16th highest rated U16 player in the World will participate at the Cappelle la Grande Championship in France and the Reykjavik Open (Iceland), thanks to sponsorship from CMA and the CFC ($1000 each).

Canadians at the 2015 Gibraltar Chess Festival!

GM Eric Hansen, GM Kevin Spraggett, FM Victor Plotkin, Jonathan Yu, Lali Agbabishvili and Ian Mahoney are participating in the 2015 Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival, starting on Tuesday, January 27. This year again, the tournament is extremely strong, with GMs Topalov and Nakamura participating.

Amazing win by David Cummings at the Panamerican Senior Championship 2014

David Cummings crushed all opposition at the Panamerican Senior Championship and finished clear first with a score of 7/7 and a FIDE performance of 3015! He should now represent Canada at the World Senior Championship.

Canada finishes fifth at the World U16 Olympiads!

Canada's first team finished fifth in the World U16 Olympiads. Their only loss was against India (the highest rated team) and they tied their matches against Croatia, Uzbekistan, Moldova, Hungary and Romania.

Michael Song should also be a FM thanks to his 2375 performance in this tournament.

Canada is sending three teams to theUnder 16 Olympiads in Hungary. Canada's strongest team is the 6th highest rated team in the tournament.

Hansen tied for third in London

The London Chess Classic Super Rapidplay was being played in London in the last week. This huge 10 round Swiss tournament featured 35 GMs, including many super-GMs like Nakamura, Caruana, Anand and Kramnik. Nakamura (who else ?) placed first at 9.5, a complete point ahead of Anish Giri (8.5).

Anton Kovalyov wins UTDallas Open

Three strong Canadian players (GM Kovalyov, IMs Hambleton and Calugar) were playing in the University of Texas at Dallas Fall Open. They were competing against 11 GMs and 12 IMs (out of 44 players). Kovalyov placed first at 7/9 (undefeated), half a point ahead of Russian GM Andrey Stukopin.

Kramnik's opponent, GM Stelios Halkias, managed to obtain a draw in the first round.

Eric Hansen won his first round at the Qatar Masters Open, Nov. 25 - Dec. 5.

Carlsen retains his crown

The World Championship Match came to an end earlier today as Vishy Anand, one game behind, needed a win in one of the last two games of the twelve games match but lost game 11, giving Carlsen a match-ending lead of 2 points with one game to go.

The final score is 6.5-4.5, or 3-1.
